The Dark Night of the Heart and Mind

Everyone is familiar with the phrase ‘the dark night of the soul’, which describes a point in life where everything looks bleak and hopeless. We experience this when a life event that we feel is out of our control happens to us and everything in our life changes. But I think the phrase ‘dark night of the soul’ is incorrect because the soul doesn’t have dark nights, it knows exactly what is going on and waits for us to be open to the peace, knowledge and transformation it holds for us.

The ‘dark night of the soul’ is really a heart and mind crisis, with the soul as the key instigator. The heart and mind are at one level of consciousness, the soul answers our call to rise to a higher level and we’re in a dark place of disconnection and fear. No longer able to connect with our ‘old’ ways and not quite in the energetic vibration that will take us to a new level, we’re in the abyss of unknowing which, without a powerful soul connection, is very dark indeed. We are at the conscious level of awareness and we’re being asked to move into enlightenment.

It’s time to release the belief that consciousness is a higher state of being and see ourselves as conscious in every aspect of our lives. What we are conscious of is what we are aware of, paying attention to, energetically empowering, and is being created in our reality at this moment. Being more conscious will not get us out of the dark night of the mind and heart because without a corresponding shift into enlightenment, we are simply going to re-create the same situation. An energetic cycle is playing out, whose resolution appears when we choose to step out of the fear cycle and into a new energetic vibration. This is a change of awareness, not a change in consciousness.

In our dark night of the mind and heart, we ask “Why is this happening to me?” when the right question is “Where is my awareness?” Then we can make the shifts, and many of them are small, that will create the soul connection that moves us from awareness into enlightenment. Through the willingness to change our awareness we raise our consciousness to new levels, rising upward along the frequency spiral to create more powerful and fulfilling realities that reflect the soul’s promise of the light when we are willing to step out of the abyss of the dark.
